Epic International Staffing (formerly Guardian Healthcare Providers and Vintage Health Resources) has worked with many amazing nurses and allied clinicians, each with their own story to tell. Today, we highlight McAlvin Gonzales, as he shares with us his journey to the U.S.

Originating from the Philippines, McAlvin is a seasoned healthcare professional with a diverse background, holding an MBA, BSN, RN, and CNOR. His desire to pursue a nursing career in the U.S. was fueled by an unwavering belief in the abundance of opportunities the country had to offer. McAlvin believed that America, with its 50 states and vast expanse, provided not only fun and excitement, but also a myriad of opportunities for personal and professional growth.

Throughout his journey, McAlvin covered many nursing specialties – from Med Surg and ER to the ICU. However, he eventually found his passion in the Operating Room. In 2016, McAlvin joined the nursing staff at a children’s hospital in Tennessee. There, he found great success, eventually rising to the position of Operating Room Director. Currently, McAlvin holds a Director position at a healthcare facility in Los Angeles, California.

How Would You Describe Your Experience with Epic?

McAlvin was not alone in his journey to the U.S. Before he even came to the country, Epic International Staffing was there to help him with his entire immigration process. He talked about the challenge of retrogression and how Epic helped take the stress out of the situation.

“Reflecting on my immigration process with Epic International Staffing (formerly Guardian), it began around 2008 or 2009, marked by a challenging wait due to retrogression. Despite the initial struggle, the experience with the agency was rewarding, as they exhibited unwavering focus, attentiveness, and genuine care for their staff.”

What Advice Would You Give to Other Nurses with a Dream to Come Live and Work in the U.S.?

As a Filipino nurse who found great success in his career in the U.S., McAlvin shared some encouraging words to other nurses who dream of living the American dream.

“To fellow nurses aspiring to work in the U.S., I would say that the journey may seem tough initially, but familiarity with the processes and adapting to life here brings surprising rewards. Embrace every opportunity, and the U.S. will unfold possibilities beyond your imagination.

What Has Been Your Experience Living in the U.S.?

McAlvin’s life in the U.S. was a mix of joy and struggle. But he reflected on the positive aspects of his experience and how it all led him to where he is now.

“The joy of living in the U.S. comes with its own set of challenges, notably being away from home. Over time, technology, innovation, and a support system of friends-turned-family helped overcome these hurdles. Communication becomes seamless, and the U.S. becomes not just a workplace but a place where one can grow personally and professionally. “

What Do You Hope for in the Future?

McAlvin has many hopes for the future, not just for himself but for the industry as a whole.

“Looking ahead, my hope is that nurses and medical staff coming to the U.S. appreciate the opportunity and uphold their commitment to agencies like Epic. Respecting contracts and avoiding opportunistic behavior ensures the trust placed in Filipino nurses continues to flourish, maintaining our stellar reputation in the U.S. healthcare system.”
