Each May, National Nurses Week offers an opportunity to recognize the compassion, commitment, and incredible impact of nurses everywhere. At Epic International Staffing, this week holds special meaning as we honor the amazing international nurses who have chosen to build their careers and their lives serving patients across the United States.

A Brief History of National Nurses Week

The roots of National Nurses Week stretch back over seventy years. In 1953, Dorothy Sutherland, a passionate advocate from the U.S. Department of Health, Education, and Welfare, proposed establishing a “National Nurse Day” to President Dwight D. Eisenhower. Although the idea wasn’t officially enacted then, it sparked a growing movement.

In 1974, the International Council of Nurses (ICN) declared May 12 – Florence Nightingale’s birthday – as International Nurse Day. Florence Nightingale, often considered the founder of modern nursing, remains an enduring symbol of compassion and medical advancement. That same year, President Richard Nixon formally recognized a week dedicated to celebrating nurses in the U.S.

Finally, in 1982, President Ronald Reagan signed a proclamation naming May 6 as the official Day of Recognition for Nurses. The American Nurses Association (ANA) later established May 6 to 12 as the permanent dates for National Nurses Week, bridging National Nurses Day with International Nurse Day in a powerful celebration of the profession’s global significance.

The Power of Nurses: National Nurses Week 2025

As we celebrate National Nurses Week 2025, the theme “The Power of Nurses™” from the American Nurses Enterprise (ANE) takes center stage. This week, organizations, communities, and individuals across the country are invited to recognize the profound influence of our nurses – not just in healthcare settings, but in every facet of our lives.

Nurses face extraordinary challenges daily. From navigating complex healthcare systems to providing emotional support during some of life’s most difficult moments, nurses are relentless advocates for their patients. National Nurses Week is a time to lift up their stories, celebrate their achievements, and express our deep gratitude for all they do.
